Birth & Childhood
Sri Nithyananda Swami was born A. Rajasekaran on 1st January 1978 in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, India. He is the second son of his parents (Late) Sri Arunachalam and Smt. Lokanayaki. He belongs to an affluent and philanthropic family from the Saiva Vellalar community. His maternal grandfather was a pious individual who contributed freely to various temples and spiritual organizations. He was Rajasekaran’s first mentor who introduced him to the great spiritual traditions and scriptures of India.

Rajesekaran completed his schooling (Std. X) from the V D S Jain Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai in 1992 and his diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Rajagopal Polytechnic, Gudiyattam, T.N. in 1995. In 1995, he joined the Ramakrishna Math in Mylapore, Chennai.

Spiritual inclinations
From a very young age, Rajasekaran was interested in worship, yoga and meditation. As a child, he would spend hours performing worship for his favorite idols. Alongside his studies at school, Rajasekaran trained in yoga from an accomplished yoga master in Tiruvannamalai named Raghupati Yogi, and completed advanced levels of yoga training.

In parallel, he also started studying the Vedic scriptures, Puranas and Upanishads under the guidance of various spiritual teachers. He encountered many holy men and women in the town of Tiruvannamalai and received many teachings from them. Prominent among them were Annamalai Swami (a direct disciple of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi), Yogi Ramsurat Kumar and Mataji Kuppammal.

When he was around 12 years old, he had a profound spiritual experience while meditating near the holy Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai. After this experience, his longing to pursue the spiritual path was greatly intensified. During and after his stay in Ramakrishna Math, he wandered as a mendicant throughout India, visiting holy shrines, learning from evolved souls and frequenting sacred pilgrimage spots. For years, he practiced intense meditation and other austerities and finally realized the state of enlightenment or inner bliss.
